Today in human geo we got our test back, even though I knew what I already got. I was glad we still got our test back so that I can know what I got wrong, and answer those questions correctly on the exam. The questions I got wrong were either stupid mistakes or I just didn't know the answer. Then after we went around the room and read and answered each question we got our tests back from like 2 weeks ago. I was happy we got those back because it will help us study for our mid terms which are in five days. I have been studying for the human geo exam because I want an A on the exam. I think if I keep studying like I am I will be find and will do well on the exam.

Today in class we took our test on Cultural Geography and World Religions. The test was a challenge because I didn't study and I really should have. My grade was not as well as I would like it to be but I deserved the grade I got. After we saw our test and saw our grades. I wish I would've studied and did better.

Cultural Geography

Examples: Language, religion, and ethnic heritage

Language:

- arabic unites the arab world
- spanish unites the hispanic world
- Brazil is the only South American nation that does not speak spanish. It speaks portuguese.
- Canada is a bilingual nation. They have provinces instead of states. French and English are their official languages
- Switzerland has multiple languages but very little conflict between the groups
- English is now considered the world language and is used for most business transactions around the world.

Ethnic Heritage:

- In Yugoslavia, many ethnic groups were made into one country. (Serbs, Croats, Bosnians, Albanians)
- When strong leadership died out, the different groups died out. A Civil War broke out and they now have different countries now
- In Rowanda and Burundi in Africa, 2 ethnic groups are dominant, the Tutsis and the Hutus
- Hutus are dominant in one and they persecute the Tutsis, and the Tutsis are dominant in the other.
- And the Tutsis persecute the Huhtus. It has lead to almost constant war between the groups
- The U.S. and Switzerland have peacefully merged ethnic groups in their counties
- Korea and Japan have one ethnic group
- On the island of Cyprus, the Greeks and Turks try to gain control

Today in human geo we started a movie called " Slumdog Millionaire " that goes along with our new chapter cultural geography. It is about the slums of Mumbai, which is quite awful. There was trash everywhere you looked and there was no "clean" place like we have in the United States. They also had to wash, bath, and drink unsanitary water. Which creates many diseases, which can kill many. Then learning that the size of their homes is about the size of my bedroom, makes me feel very thankful. Also, seeing what there schools were like makes me feel extremely grateful that I am able to go to John Carroll in a clean and safe environment. It makes me think about all of the things I take for granite. In the movie a teenage boy who was once an orphan goes on a huge TV show, where if you answer the question correctly you win money. This teenager has been the farthest contestant, and with that being said they think that he is cheating somehow. They feel this way because doctors and lawyers haven't even gotten this far in the game. Even though he is not cheating, he is tortured because they think he is. There police system is also very different, you see this in the movie when they torture him instead of just interrogating him. I can't wait to finish the movie and to see what happens to this poor teenage boy.

Today in human geo we had a sub because Mr. Schick was not here. Mr. Schick put our assignments on his blog. I already finished what Mr. Schick assigned to do, so I was able to work on other homework.

Monday, November 17, 2014

Today in human geo we got to see our test grades and then we talked about our new chapter "Cultural Geography".
We started off by looking at a map of the United States that showed how all over the US. population call "pop" different. Some people like myself and my family call it pop, or sometimes soda. Most people in the north call it pop, for example Minnesota and Chicago. People in the south call it coke, for example Texas and Kentucky. Other people in the west and east call it soda, for example California and New York. We then realized that in Florida there is a lot of different color which represents wether they call it pop, soda, or coke. In Florida this happens because a lot of people move to Florida because of their warm climate, which brings in many different cultures.

Then we moved on to talking about:

Cultural Characteristics

Cultural Characteristics are parts of a groups everyday life. They are the ideas and themes which the group will teach to all members. These same characteristics can also link or divide a region.

Examples of cultural characteristics would be language, religion, and ethnic heritage.

Today in human geo we got assigned 2 projects to do. I chose to find our countries national anthem. The country Grace and I have chosen to look up is Brazil.

Video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyyOahYXhUQ

Lyrics :

I
The peaceful banks of the Ipiranga
Heard the resounding cry of an heroic people,
And the dazzling rays of the sun of Liberty
Bathed our country in their brilliant light.
If with strong arm we have succeeded
In winning a pledge of equality,
In thy bosom, O Liberty,
Our hearts will defy death itself!
O adored Fatherland,
Cherished and revered,
All hail! All Hail!
Brazil, a dream sublime, vivid ray of love and hope to earth descends,
Where in your clear, pure, beauteous skies
The image of the Southern Cross shines forth.
O country vast by nature,
Fair and strong, brave and colossus,
Thy future mirrors this thy greatness.
O land adored
Above all others,
'Tis thee Brazil,
Beloved Fatherland!
Thou art the gentle mother of the children of this soil,
Beloved land,
Brazil!
II
Laid out eternally in the splendor of nature,
In the sound of the sea and the light of heaven,
may thou shine, O Brazil, flower of America,
Illumined by the sun of the New World!
More flowers put forth in thy fair, smiling fields
Than the in the most gorgeously reputed lands;
"More life is to be found in the groves",
"More love in our lives" in thy embrace.
O adored Fatherland,
Cherished and revered,
All Hail!
All Hail!
May the star-scattered banner flown by thee,
Brazil, become the symbol of eternal love,
And may the green-gold flag proclaim always
- Peace in the future and glory in the past -
But if the mighty sword of justice drawn forth,
You will perceive your children, who adore you,
neither fear to fight,
nor flee from death itself.
O land adored
Above all others,
'Tis thee Brazil,
Beloved Fatherland!
Thou art the gentle mother of the children of this soil,
Beloved land,
Brazil!

Today in human geo we took our test. I felt very prepared because I studied the night before and was pretty confident. Once I got the test I got a little nervous but overall I thought it was pretty easy. The multiple choice was about 30 questions and mostly everything asked was on the quiz we took about 2 or 3 weeks ago and the others were from the powerpoint presentation. A couple of questions were a little bit of a challenge but overall I think I did fairly well. The essay was also a fairly easy part, and I hope that I answered the question correctly and wrote enough. Overall Im hoping for an A, but I think I will at least have a B.

Today in Human Geo we were not able to take the test due to problems with the powerpoint. Mr. Schick was kind enough to give it to us tomorrow. The power point wouldn't let us access the links that Mr. Schick put on certain slides to study from. Since Mckenna and Chris were one of the ones chosen to have their powerpoint on the study guide, Mr. Schick had them change their powerpoint. He made them change their powerpoint so it would be viewable to everyone, so that we could study. Then Mr. Schick gave us the rest of the mod to make flashcards on quizlet and study for the test tomorrow. I made a quizlet to help me study. I am pretty confident that I will do well on this test, at least I hope.

Today in Human Geo we finished up our powerpoints and made sure everything on them was correct. Mr. Schick was nice enough to let us have the whole class to meet up with our partner and make sure everything was ready for us to present on Wednesday. Grace and I had finished our project so we were able to proofread and go over the information on each slide. I feel that our project is very good, and that we are ready to present on Wednesday. I then began to make notecards for both of us so we can talk about our project in more detail, without having a lot of information on each slide. Then after we both finished our notecards and going over the project, we worked on other homework. This class helped Grace and I by allowing us to get organized and ready to present. Thank You Mr. Schick !

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

Today in Human Geo class we started our projects. Mr. Schick went over what needed to put on the slides and how we should write and design our slides. My partner, Grace, and I looked at Mr. Schick's blog to see what questions we need to answer. The questions we need to answer are the kind of government the country has, how long they have existed under their present for of government, how long their present leaders have been in power, how long they are expected to stay in power, and some ways their people can effect a change in leadership. After Grace and I looked over these questions I started our project. We started off with the first slide and got the hang of what we need to do. We still need to finish but now we know how everything should be done correctly.

Monday, October 27, 2014

Today in Human Geo class we learned about our new group assignment. Chris went up to the board and wrote down the people we chose to work with. I was chosen by Grace to work with her. Grace and I chose to work on the United Kingdom in the beginning, but since there was so much confusion and people not wanting to work with other class mates we had to change things up a bit. Grace, Kelsey, and myself are now in a group working on Brazil because thats what Kelsey wanted. Finally everyone knew who they were working with and what country they were working on. Mr. Schick told us to create a google document and share it will the people in our group. We are suppose to write about the country's government, their leader and how they got to that position. Also we have to write about how we can throw out the governments leader.

Today was our first class in about a week. When I got my test back I was surprised with my grade. I noticed a mistake and talked to Mr. Schick and he was nice enough to change my grade. After everyone got their test back we took 10 minutes to go over the questions on the front of the page. I thought that part was pretty easy, and we finished that part with one minute to spare. After we turned the paper over to see if there were any questions on that side, and we did the same for the other pages. Then we went over answers for the push and pull forces because that was a little confusing to some. After we just talked and finished up the quiz.

Thursday, October 9, 2014

Today in class we went over things on the test again. First, we started off by seeing the time that will be used in class, and on the clock it showed 10 minutes. That means we would have 10 minutes to answer the questions based on the world fact book. The test will also have things on it like the key terms, population pyramids, and the CIA fact book. Then we watched a video of a hamster eating the world's smallest burrito. At the end of class Mr. Schick went around and predicted what they would get on the test. I feel that I will do a very good job since I know all of the things on the test and I have studied.

Monday, October 6, 2014

Today we talked about our country in our own opinion. We gave reasons why we thought it was the best and why it could be know as the worst country. We summed up the rest of the discussion of our opinions of America. Then, we went onto the CIA world fact book and looked for interesting facts. We also got told about a test that was suppose to be on wednesday and is now on Friday because people had a test that day and thats the day when we have all of our classes. We talked about what the test would be on, it would be on things from our blogs and notes, and we also got told to make sure we knew our way around the CIA fact book and could do it in a reasonable amount of time. By the end of the class everyone had found an new interesting fact.

Saturday, October 4, 2014

On Friday I was not in class because I was not feeling well. But I feel much better now and will be back in class on monday.

Thursday, October 2, 2014

Today in human geo class we had to look at the world fact book and look at the population charts. Meanwhile Mr. Schick had to go watch someone's class because their teacher was not feeling to well, and decided to throw up. After we went over how spotify would like students to use their programs, and see how it would work for students like us. Mr. Schick went all around the room telling each of us our 3 month free code. Then we all set up accounts or used the ones we already had. I had to help a couple of people but for the most part everyone already had an account. Then we listened to music and just talked to our friends for the rest of the class.

1. According to the Population Reference Bureau's "2013 World Population Data Sheet", 271 are born every minute, and 106 die every minute. That's a global net population increase of 165 per minute. This lesson was published on May 5th. What's the estimated global population increase exactly one week later (May 12th)?

                - D: 1,663,200

2. As a country slows in population growth, its pyramid shape will  A: become wider at the base and narrower at the top

                - B. be inverted

3. What does a Population Pyramid NOT give you information about?

                - C. Life Expectancy Rate

4. Which continent would have the most fast-growth pyramids?

                - A. Africa

Some Facts Are

- Japan's Pyramid will start to bulge when we hit 2015 and in 2050 the pyramid will be very narrow at the top and will bulge on the top half.
- In Rwanda the population pyramid is very wide at the bottom and narrow at the top.
- China and  Canada will increase very slowly unlike Rwanda.

In human geo we went over facts in the world fact book. Here is some of those facts

- Mexico requires 13 years of school
- Germany requires 16 years of school
- Vatican City is the size o JC's campus

- All of Germany's the water is clean and anyone can access the sanitation facilities
- In Australia the population is going up since many people are moving there

Thursday, September 25, 2014

Today in human geo we went over all of the things we would need to know if there would be a pop quiz tomorrow. The topics we talked about was the TFR, push and pull factors, immigration, and emigration. Mr.  Schick wanted to make sure that we all understood the information correctly because it could be confusing to some. Since all of us said we know what all of the topics were, Mr. Schick thought that it would be a good idea to ask us questions and have us answer them. Once Mr. Schick asked the question we didn't really know the answers as well as we thought we did.

Wednesday, September 24, 2014

In Human Geo today Mr. Schick handed back our tests. If you got an A he rang this bell once but if you got an hundred he rang the bell twice. I didn't get an A but when I saw my test I was okay with the grade I earned. This just shows me that I need to study more and need to try harder. So once all of the tests were handed out we started going around the room and answering the questions. You had to read the question and then answer it correctly. This gave all of us an opportunity to write down the correct answers and to ask any questions that you had. For the essay questions we got told to write down details or things that we didn't have. We also talked about opening sentences for our essays. And we finished off class with Mr. Schick ranting about how everyone wrote "live life to its fullest" on one of the essay questions.

Measuring Population

- crude birth rate : number of births per 1,000 of the population
- crude death rate : number of deaths per 1,000 of the population

Rate of Natural Increase (RNI)

-  produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate
-  gives us annual natural growth rate in percentage form for a country or region

More Measurement of Population

-  net migration rate : the difference between the number of persons entering and leaving a country      during a year

-  an excess of persons entering the country is net immigration
          - written as a positive number
          - Ex. Canada has 5.65 migrants per 1,000 population
          - United States 3.62

-  an excess of persons leaving the country is net immigration
          - written as a negative number
          - Ex. Mexico has -3.1l migrants per 1,000 population
          - It was -3.61 last year

Thursday, September 18, 2014

Today in class we talked about our new chapter called Population and settlement - people on land. We open our notebooks and put everything away just like we were told and we started taking notes. The first thing we took notes on were "more people then ever". In this slide we learned and took notes on many of things. Examples of what we had to write down would be how many people there are on the planet and how many people are born a year, and a day. 90% of population growth takes place in developing countries. Some developing countries are Africa, South and East Asia, and Latin America. The last thing we talked about was life expectancy. Life expectancy is the number of years to be lived by a group of people born in the same year. After we wrote all of that down we talked about life expectancies and how they are changing. We looked at some numbers and compared our life expectancy to others.

Monday, September 15, 2014

Today in our human geo class we started off by singing happy birthday to myself. After we started class with talking about our review for our test on Wednesday. Mr. Schick went over the 4 main topics that will be on our test. The four main topics are Message to Garcia, Ancient Greece, Did you know 3.0, and Globalization. For the Message to Garcia we talked about the meaning of a Message to Garcia, who delivered the message, who wrote the message, and what was the war that took place when Message to Garcia was delivered. For Ancient Greece we talked about knowing the vocabulary words and what they meant and what was the most important date was in Ancient Greece. For the Did you know 3.0 video we talked about what was said in the video and how and what it means. Lastly we talked about Globalization, which we talked about how fast food in Japan has effect people's health and life styles.

Saturday, September 13, 2014

In today’s human geo class we talked about globalization. globalization is the connection of different parts of the world. Globalization is also the expansion of international cultural, economic, and political activities. Globalization has not just been invented it has been around for many of years. China was isolated for a couple of years and was once the only one who could produce silk. That is globalization back then , and this is globalization now.
Americans have globalized this world by making it one of our on by the buildings, malls, and food. Chinese people have always been know as the people who would live the longest but the fast food is now effecting their health. Now it is effecting a little to much on families, and how they stay together. With there now being fast food places people tend to go get their own dinner there because its fast but they don’t have the family time like they would like to have.

Thursday, September 11, 2014

Today in class we talked about how India and China’s population is much higher than ours and that there is more of them then the United States will ever have. We also talked about how back in the day if you had many different jobs people would have thought that you weren’t a good employee and that now it is okay and most people have many jobs before the age of 30. There most likely have that many jobs because people go after the money or they just didn’t like it.

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

Today in class we watched a video called "Did you know?". This video showed us how big and how fast this world is moving. When i first saw this video I really didn't think about it as much as I should have. Once we started to talk and go over what everything meant it started to click. This changes us to because it tells and lets us be aware what we should except in our future. The technology in this world is very important to everyone. Where would we be with out technology, it means a lot to us in school, jobs, and for our heath and safety. The technology lets me be able to learn and keep up with my school work. I can't wait to see what happens in our future with technology.
